Witness protection
Your testimony matters. You can keep your identity out of the public story while helping others understand history.
Protected witness
Your name is hidden from public story pages and map pins. Protected and anonymous stories do not link to the contributor's profile. Private contact details are not shown publicly.
Authorised reviewers — administrators, moderators and approved historian curators — can see private witness details while reviewing a submission. Protected does not mean hidden from the review team.
Fully anonymous testimony
The anonymous option lets a signed-out contributor submit without providing a witness name. It is labelled unverified and requires careful review. When signed in, the form uses protected identity instead, because the submission is connected to your account.
Check every detail before sharing
- Remove names, addresses, workplaces and other identifying details from the story, interview notes and captions if disclosure could put someone at risk.
- Photos, videos and recordings can reveal faces, voices, documents and locations. Remove identifying content and location metadata yourself before uploading; automatic metadata removal is not yet available.
- Public stories may be translated by AI. Check translations for accidental identifying details or changes in meaning, and request a correction when needed.
Important limits
We hide private identity fields from public readers, but cannot promise absolute anonymity or that an identity will never be disclosed. Story details may identify someone, and legal obligations may require disclosure. This site is not a legal witness-protection programme. If you face immediate danger, seek trusted local protection advice before posting.
